Great Britain Fetches Medals From Deaflympics
21st Summer Deaflympics 2009 held in Taipei this event formerly known as the World Games for Deaf, which comprises of 4,000 athletes from 81 countries. Great Britain has gained 10 medals including one gold. In tennis for mixed doubles final Anthony Sinclair and Catherine Graham earned gold.
Great Britain was 26th in the overall position on the other hand Russia topped in position by gaining 98 medals counting 29 gold’s. Britain received the first gold medal not more than 50 years. Graham uttered saying standing in the podium getting medals was the proudest moment ever. She added saying we worked hard and our main motive was to bring back home gold medal. Anthony Sinclair had been a runner up in men’s singles in Melbourne and earned silver four years ago. US based teenage swimmer Hannah Fitton gained silver and three bronzes. Lauren
Peffers won two silvers in 400 and 800m whereas Serena Blackburn and Joanne Davidson obtained bronzes in marathon and hammer. In men’s singles, Rajeev Bagga obtained silver. Craig Crowley who will take over as president of International Committee of Sports for deaf applauded the hard work of GB team. He uttered saying we are extremely proud of our athletes for winning 10 medals in spite of not receiving any fund from either home country sports councils or government.
